Emmanuel Wanyonyi has established a new global benchmark in the 1,000m event during his first competition at this distance. The 21-year-old Kenyan, already a world champion in the 800m, completed the race at the Monaco Diamond League in two minutes 11.83 seconds.
This performance surpasses the previous record established by Noah Ngeny in 1999 by 0.13 seconds. Great Britain’s Jake Wightman secured second place with a personal best of two minutes 12.77 seconds, placing him fifth on the all-time list. Algerian athlete Djamel Sedjati claimed the third position, while Ben Pattison from Great Britain finished fifth.
Reflecting on the achievement, Wanyonyi expressed his satisfaction but declined to discuss potential attempts at the 800m world record held by David Rudisha. He emphasized that he prefers to focus on consistent improvement. Elsewhere at the event, Collen Kebinatshipi won the 400m in a Diamond League record time of 43.44 seconds, while Julien Alfred triumphed in the women’s 200m with a swift 21.51 seconds, making her the third-fastest woman in history for that event. Armand Duplantis cleared 6.07m to set a new meeting record in the pole vault.
