After eight weeks of captivity, dozens of students and educators abducted from three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been freed. The state government highlighted this result as a major success, noting that their firm refusal to pay any ransom payments proved effective against the kidnappers. Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade confirmed the safe return of the individuals and noted that Governor Seyi Makinde remained steadfast against paying criminal groups, believing such payments would only incentivize further acts of violence.
The incident began on May 15, 2026, when armed individuals raided Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School. The attackers seized 39 students and seven teachers, including a principal. Tragically, teacher Joel Adesiyan was killed during the initial assault, and another teacher, Michael Oyedokun, died while held captive. Following the release, the survivors thanked President Bola Tinubu and security forces for their rescue efforts.
This case caused significant public alarm and led the Nigeria Union of Teachers to hold a month-long protest to demand faster action from the government. Despite the immense pressure, the administration maintained its stance against negotiating with criminals, emphasizing a focus on long-term safety and cooperation with security agencies to secure the region.
