Governor Alia Commits to Supporting New 5 Division Army Base in Benue

Governor Hyacinth Alia has pledged full government support, including land and logistics, for the establishment of the Nigerian Army’s new 5 Division headquarters in Benue State.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has promised total state government backing for the creation of new Nigerian Army formations within the region. He spoke on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, while welcoming the Army Headquarters Implementation Committee at the Government House in Makurdi.

Governor Alia noted that hosting the 5 Division headquarters will be instrumental in enhancing local security and safeguarding citizens. The administration has committed to providing the required land and logistical assistance to ensure the base becomes operational without delay.

During the meeting, the Governor thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for selecting Benue to host the division. He also praised the Chief of Army Staff for his role in the decision. Alia emphasized that this increased military presence is vital for addressing ongoing security threats in the area and will help restore public peace.

Furthermore, the Governor honored soldiers who lost their lives in service and saluted current troops for their vigilance. He also welcomed Major General M. K. Gara, the inaugural General Officer Commanding of the 5 Division, pledging a lasting partnership. Led by Major General Raymond T. Utsaha, the committee is currently in Benue to fast-track the establishment of these new military installations.
