Abia State mandates demolition of unstable four-story structure in Aba

Abia State officials have ordered the demolition of a compromised four-story building in Aba to prevent a potential collapse and ensure public safety.

The Abia State government has directed the immediate demolition of a damaged four-story building situated at 71 Clifford Road in Aba. Residents were spotted removing their personal items as onlookers gathered at the site.

Architect Uche Ukeje, the Director General of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), confirmed that his agency acted immediately after receiving reports of visible damage. Preliminary assessments identified severe foundational cracks, suggesting that the building’s structural integrity has been significantly weakened.

Ukeje stated that an investigation into the cause of the failure is currently underway. He emphasized that the building is now deemed unfit for occupancy, as the structural faults could trigger a collapse if left unaddressed. To ensure public safety, all occupants have been removed. GADA is now coordinating a controlled demolition to prevent injuries or harm to surrounding properties. The agency has urged the public to remain calm, follow safety instructions, and report any future signs of building instability to local authorities.
