Senate Authorizes N403.1 Billion for Nigeria Police Trust Fund 2025-2026 Budgets

The Nigerian Senate has approved a combined budget of N403.1 billion for the Police Trust Fund for 2025 and 2026 to enhance operational capacity and infrastructure.

The Nigerian Senate has finalized the approval of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, covering the fiscal periods of 2025 and 2026. This allocation consists of approximately N170.1 billion for 2025 and N233.9 billion for 2026.

Senator Yunus Akintunde, serving as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented the report on behalf of committee head Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori. The funds are earmarked for critical operational needs, including the purchase of equipment and vehicles, the renovation of police facilities, and extensive staff training.

For the 2026 fiscal cycle, the total package includes N222.89 billion for capital projects and N11.07 billion for recurrent costs. The 2025 budget follows a similar structure, with N159.74 billion dedicated to capital expenditure and N10.36 billion allocated for recurrent expenses.

Resources for these budgets are sourced through statutory Federation Account revenues, a portion of Value Added Tax, corporate net profit levies, and various grants. The Senate committee emphasized the need for rigorous oversight to ensure these funds are utilized efficiently. Furthermore, they urged the police force to prioritize infrastructure improvements and personnel welfare to boost overall law enforcement capabilities.
