Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo has called on Peter Obi, the Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate, to publicly apologize to airport staff and settle a N25,000 fine. This follows an incident where Obi claimed his vehicle was unfairly clamped at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to harass him.
Keyamo launched an internal inquiry into the July 4, 2026, event. Based on CCTV evidence, he stated that a police officer driving the vehicle parked it in a restricted drop-off zone and left it unattended for roughly 30 minutes. The minister noted that security personnel, unaware of who owned the car, clamped the tyres due to this breach of safety regulations.
The minister alleged that after the driver returned, Obi intervened by speaking with the airport manager and using his influence to secure the vehicle’s release without paying the mandatory penalty. Keyamo characterized the unattended vehicle as a security threat and criticized Obi for painting the incident as political victimization.
Keyamo has given Obi a seven-day ultimatum to apologize to the airport employees and pay the fine. Failure to comply will lead to further legal directives issued to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) against the politician.
