Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has pledged that the police will maintain strict impartiality throughout the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. During a briefing with civil society leaders in Abuja, including Auwal Rafsanjani of CISLAC, Disu emphasized that the force is fully prepared to uphold the integrity of the voting process.
Disu confirmed that extensive security strategies are already active to guarantee a secure and transparent poll. He noted that all officers assigned to the state have been instructed to conduct themselves with high professional standards and avoid partisan influence. According to the IGP, the police force holds no preference for any candidate or party and is focused entirely on protecting the democratic will of the electorate.
To support this, officials and tactical equipment have been stationed across the region, bolstered by increased intelligence efforts to preempt security risks. Disu issued a stern warning that illegal activities such as ballot theft, voter suppression, and financial inducement during the election will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, regardless of the perpetrator’s political standing.
Finally, he called on political stakeholders to promote a peaceful atmosphere, urging candidates to compete on their policy merits rather than through intimidation. Residents were encouraged to participate in the election with confidence, assured that their safety is a priority.
