Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, has pledged the Nigerian Army’s dedication to defending the nation and managing modern security risks. Speaking at the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) lecture in Port Harcourt, Shaibu highlighted how insurgency, terrorism, cyber warfare, and organized crime have complicated the domestic security environment. He also pointed to regional instability in the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, and the Gulf of Guinea as significant concerns.
To address these issues, the Army is focusing on being more agile, innovative, and adaptive. Shaibu noted that the force is integrating new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, and improving intelligence-led operations through collaborations with other security agencies. He emphasized that the Army remains committed to a people-oriented approach, focusing on human rights and adherence to established rules of engagement.
The Army Chief praised the officers and soldiers for their service, while also acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu and other partners. Retired Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo, serving as the special guest, commended the institution for its role in national stability and encouraged continued investment in modernizing operations to maintain effectiveness.
