Ian Wright questions Argentina’s potential to repeat as World Cup champions

Ian Wright believes Argentina is susceptible to defeat after struggling to overcome Cape Verde in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.

Retired Arsenal forward Ian Wright has shared his skepticism regarding Argentina’s ability to retain their World Cup title in 2026. His comments followed a challenging 3-2 victory for the reigning champions against Cape Verde during their Round of 32 matchup.

Lionel Messi struck first in Miami, though an equalizer from Deroy Durate forced the contest into extra time. Lisandro Martinez regained the lead for Argentina, but Sidny Cabral responded with a precise shot to keep Cape Verde in the game. Eventually, the defending champions secured the win in the 111th minute to advance to the next round.

Speaking on ITV, Wright argued that the team is currently vulnerable. He noted that if a team with more offensive clinicality replicates the work rate displayed by Cape Verde, Argentina could be defeated. He specifically highlighted defensive weaknesses on the flanks as an area where opponents can find success against them.
