Fifa has revoked the press credentials of broadcaster Jorge Vera following a volatile, profanity-filled critique of the organization and match officials during a broadcast of Paraguay’s 1-0 win against Turkey.
The controversy began when Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron was dismissed from the pitch. Almiron became the first player in history to receive a red card specifically for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent, Turkey’s Mert Muldur. Muldur reported the action to the match referee immediately.
After a VAR review, referee Ivan Barton ejected Almiron before halftime. During the live broadcast, Vera labeled both Fifa president Gianni Infantino and the match official as thieves, claiming they were destroying the sport. Vera later apologized for his behavior on social media, confirming that his tournament accreditation had been rescinded.
Vera acknowledged that his frustration over the call led him to use language that was inappropriate and offensive. By losing his credentials, he is prohibited from further World Cup coverage for Paraguayan outlets ABC Cardinal and ABC TV, both inside and outside match venues. He formally apologized to Fifa, admitting his reaction was unprofessional and failed to meet the standards expected of his position. While Fifa has not issued an official statement, sources indicate the governing body viewed his conduct as a significant violation of broadcast standards.
