Football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic reached out to Lucas Herrington after Australia was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup by Egypt during the Round of 32. Ibrahimovic praised the 18-year-old for his courage in stepping up to take a spot-kick during the shootout at Dallas Stadium.
Egypt took an early lead through an Emam Ashour header, but Australia forced an equalizer in the 55th minute thanks to an own goal by Mohamed Hany. The match remained deadlocked through extra time, forcing a penalty shootout. While Harry Souttar missed his attempt, Herrington hit the crossbar, leading to Egypt’s victory after Hossam Abdelmaguid secured the winning strike.
Addressing the teenager on Fox Sports, Ibrahimovic highlighted his bravery for taking the penalty at such a young age. He encouraged Herrington, calling him the best and offering his support for future conversations. Herrington, who serves as the youngest starter for Australia in this tournament, also holds the record for being the youngest player in MLS history.
