Mining Areas in Plateau State Face Rising Threat from Armed Groups

Armed attacks on mining sites in Plateau State have led to loss of life and economic disruption, prompting the state government to implement new security regulations and military operations.

Plateau State is widely recognized for its vast reserves of tin, columbite, and other valuable minerals, which draw numerous workers to the region. However, this economic potential is currently overshadowed by a severe security crisis. Armed groups are increasingly targeting mining sites, creating a dangerous environment for laborers and host communities.

A recent violent episode occurred on Monday at a site in Nyango, Gyel District, located in the Jos South Local Government Area. Gunmen arrived around 11:50 a.m. and opened fire, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries. Witnesses reported that many workers narrowly escaped by fleeing the area immediately. This event follows a pattern of previous attacks, including incidents in Gero Village and Kuru community earlier in 2026, where several lives were also lost.

Miners report that these attackers often seize extracted minerals and create a climate of fear that forces many to abandon their work. In response to the instability, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has implemented reforms to regulate the sector, including the creation of a Technical Committee on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining. The administration has also prohibited night-time mining, requiring all operations to cease by 5 p.m. to help security forces better monitor the region.

Military units under Operation Enduring Peace are currently conducting clearance missions to destroy criminal strongholds in Jos South, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos. Despite these efforts, community organizations such as the Berom Youth Moulders-Association are calling for more robust security measures and improved intelligence gathering to protect residents from further violence.
