The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has stepped forward to clarify comments made by General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adeboye regarding Nigeria’s security climate. Leadership within the church maintains that the cleric was emphasizing the need for governmental accountability rather than offering a defense for the current administration’s performance.
Pastor Johnson Odesola, the Continental Overseer for RCCG Continent 3, issued a statement titled Pastor Adeboye Deserves Fair Hearing, Not Unfair Criticism. He argued that public reaction stems from cherry-picked video snippets rather than the comprehensive message delivered at the US–Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala in Washington, D.C. Odesola noted that Adeboye’s remark about the President not needing to wear military fatigues and engage in combat was a constitutional observation rather than a dismissal of national insecurity.
Addressing the fallout, Odesola explained that Pastor Adeboye had actually pressed President Bola Tinubu to provide military commanders with a 90-day ultimatum to eradicate terrorism. By suggesting this, the cleric was demanding tangible results from security leadership. Furthermore, Odesola noted that Adeboye highlighted the importance of identifying and stopping the financiers behind terrorist organizations, arguing that insurgents rely on logistical and financial support from powerful actors.
Odesola dismissed the idea that religious figures should remain silent on political affairs, drawing comparisons to biblical prophets who advised or challenged rulers. He concluded by urging the public to prioritize productive dialogue over partisan bickering, stressing that the humanitarian cost of banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria is far too high to be sidelined by manufactured social media outrage.
