Tensions flared in the Osun State governorship race on Friday as leading political parties traded accusations regarding past political violence. Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party’s Imole Campaign Council (ICC) reached out to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to demand urgent action ahead of the August 15 poll.
During the police chief’s visit to the state, the APC campaign organization, represented by Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, pushed for the arrest of several suspects already declared wanted for the deaths of their party members. The APC specifically requested a fresh investigation into various murder cases dating back to 2022, including the alleged attempted assassination of their Director-General, Hon. Oluwole Oke. They pointed to specific individuals—Olalekan Oyeyemi, Nurudeen Wakili, Solomon Adefioye, and Jide Joda—and requested a probe into allegations regarding Senator Lere Oyewumi.
Simultaneously, the Imole Campaign Council issued a rebuttal through spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi. They contended that several Accord Party supporters had also been killed in politically motivated attacks. The council demanded the removal of the current Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, arguing that his replacement is necessary to ensure neutrality and public trust before voters head to the polls. Furthermore, they urged the Inspector-General to probe APC figures, including gubernatorial candidate Bola Oyebamiji, regarding violence against their own ranks.
Both factions concluded their statements by calling on their respective supporters to maintain peace and adhere to the law, emphasizing the need for stability as the election date approaches.
