Desmond Elliot, an actor who transitioned into politics, insists that his time in office has been defined by public service rather than financial gain. Representing Surulere Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Elliot discussed his governance philosophy during an appearance on Morayo Brown’s talk show.
He reminded his fellow politicians that holding office is a fleeting privilege. He emphasized that being in a position of power does not equate to superiority over others, noting that many individuals are just as qualified, if not more so. He stressed the importance of remembering mortality, stating that public officials are not in their roles permanently.
Reflecting on his legislative tenure, the 52-year-old highlighted the significant progress made in electricity distribution within his constituency. He characterized this improvement as his most significant contribution, asserting that his integrity keeps him from misappropriating funds. He contrasted current living conditions in Surulere with the state of the area a decade ago, pointing to enhanced healthcare and power supply as evidence of his impact.
Elliot also proposed that Nigeria create a bespoke democratic framework rather than importing foreign systems. He suggested a 30-year roadmap that would rotate power among different regions, arguing that a long-term plan is essential for the nation. Regarding national leadership, he remarked that he currently sees no viable successor for President Bola Tinubu. Elliot began his political journey in 2014 with the All Progressives Congress and has served Surulere Constituency I since his 2015 election.
