The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has directed the removal of the Article Shopping Complex in Satellite Town. Furthermore, property owners at the Agric and Coker markets in Ajeromi-Ifelodun have been granted two weeks to perform structural integrity assessments on their buildings.
This initiative followed an inspection on Thursday involving LASBCA representatives at the Oriade Local Council Development Area, alongside the Agric and Coker markets near the Odun-Ade axis. Inspectors identified significant structural flaws in numerous commercial units, raising alarms regarding the security of local traders.
Kolawole Williams, the director of quality control for the Badagry Division, stated that the state is dedicated to upholding construction standards to mitigate the risk of building failures. Williams confirmed that tenants of the Article Shopping Complex will be removed prior to its destruction. Notably, an office block currently under development within that complex was already leveled during the recent enforcement visit. The complex sits near a three-story structure that suffered a fatal collapse last week, claiming nine lives.
Data from the agency indicates that 90 percent of the structures evaluated within these markets showed varying levels of decay. Despite earlier warnings issued on January 29, 2026, businesses have continued to operate within these unstable premises. While some market leaders claimed that repairs were in progress, the agency insists that minor renovations cannot replace the requirement for formal engineering tests. Property owners must submit their findings to the agency within 14 days or face potential legal consequences for failing to adhere to public safety regulations.
