The Lagos State Government is advocating for deeper cooperation between the youth population and law enforcement, emphasizing that consistent communication and rights-focused education are vital for regional security. This initiative was highlighted during the Political Intelligence Summit on Youth-Police Engagement, a collaborative event hosted by the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement and the Bureau of the Public Defender at the Nigeria Police Zone 2 Headquarters.
Centered on the theme “Bridging the Gap: Youth-Police Engagement for Community Safety and Social Reform,” the summit united various stakeholders, including security personnel, legal experts, and youth representatives. The goal was to foster trust and refine the relationship between the police and citizens. Dr. Babatunde Omotayo, representing Special Adviser Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu prioritizes inclusive governance and shared responsibility in security matters. He argued that young people are essential partners whose creativity is vital to developing resilient communities.
AIG Olorundare Moshood Jimoh of the Zone 2 Command echoed these sentiments, stressing that successful policing relies on mutual understanding. He encouraged youth to act as strategic partners by sharing accurate information and avoiding false narratives. The AIG further noted that police-youth relations in Lagos have seen measurable improvement due to ongoing dialogue platforms facilitated by the state government.
