An assault on the Okpafie community in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State has left two people dead and over 40 cows missing. The raid occurred on Tuesday evening within the Oyilawu village area of Okonobo Ward.
Local witnesses identified one of the deceased as Benjamin, a resident of the area. According to an anonymous local source, the gunmen struck while many of the town’s young men were preoccupied with a football game, which prevented a rapid defense. By the time community members organized to respond, the perpetrators had already escaped with the stolen herd.
The source also reported that a local vigilante member was killed at Aidogodo while trying to intercept the attackers as they fled. This violence follows a recent incident in the Sai community of Katsina-Ala, where armed herders set homes on fire and caused casualties, though official figures for that event remain unconfirmed. The Benue State Police Command has not yet released a formal statement regarding the Okpokwu incident.
