Nigerian Government Preparing Further Evacuations Amid South African Unrest

The Nigerian government is organizing a new evacuation mission for citizens in South Africa as looting and unrest continue to impact foreign-owned businesses.

Authorities in Nigeria have finalized arrangements to bring home another group of its citizens currently trapped in South Africa in the wake of xenophobic violence. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, speaking for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, verified that an evacuation process is being organized, though an exact timeframe remains unannounced.

Rev Frank Onyekwelu, who leads the Nigerian community in South Africa, indicated that the process is currently moving forward. While no direct violence against Nigerians has been reported recently, he highlighted that widespread looting of foreign-owned businesses continues across the nation. Onyekwelu recounted reports of individuals forcing their way into stores and supermarkets to steal merchandise late into the evening. He also noted that a local resident was fatally shot during the unrest, though the origin of the gunfire has yet to be determined.
