Soldiers under Operation Enduring Peace successfully repelled an attempted assault on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) located in Kuru, Jos South, Plateau State. During the encounter, military units neutralized a suspected member of a Berom militia group.
As reported by counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the skirmish took place around 12:10 a.m. on July 2, when armed individuals tried to penetrate the institute’s security zone. Personnel from Sector 6 engaged the intruders, resulting in one fatality and the retreat of the remaining attackers into nearby rocky areas.
Upon inspecting the body of the deceased, soldiers discovered a service rifle (serial number CO-3175). Military records link this weapon to an April 11, 2026, raid at the Federal College of Land Resources Technology in Vom, where a soldier was killed. The rifle, which contained 16 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, is now in military possession. The deceased attacker’s body was moved to a mortuary in Vom following an initial check at Keystone Hospital.
This event represents the third security breach attempt at NIPSS in recent weeks. Previous incidents include a June 16 attack that resulted in the deaths of Inspector Peter Joseph and two soldiers, and a June 29 intrusion attempt. Investigators believe the recovered rifle may offer significant clues regarding the militia networks active in the Kuru-Vom corridor. Currently, the military has bolstered surveillance and patrols in the region to locate the remaining suspects and stabilize the area.
