Nigerian Navy Shuts Down Illegal Oil Storage Site in Rivers State

Personnel from the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base BONNY neutralized an illegal crude oil storage site in Rivers State, recovering 20,500 litres of stolen product.

In Bonny, Rivers State, the Nigerian Navy successfully located and destroyed a clandestine crude oil storage site. Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, stated that troops from Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY executed the raid as part of Operation DELTA SENTINEL.

Acting on specific intelligence, the team searched the Bethel Community area, revealing several hidden pits used for holding stolen crude. The raid uncovered six pits, with three holding roughly 20,500 litres of suspected stolen oil, while the others were being readied for use. The site appeared to be a structured hub intended to facilitate illegal refining and economic sabotage.

Following standard protocols, the Navy dismantled the site and neutralized the products to prevent further criminal use. Captain Folorunsho emphasized that the service is shifting its focus toward dismantling the core infrastructure used by oil thieves rather than only stopping shipments. By destroying these storage networks, the Navy aims to erode the operational capabilities of criminal groups. The spokesperson reiterated the military’s firm dedication to protecting Nigeria’s energy resources and maritime security through proactive, intelligence-driven operations.
