Armed forces have intensified their activities near the Lake Chad Islands after intelligence indicated that internal power struggles have compromised the operational strength of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Security informants confirmed to counter-terrorism analyst Zagazola Makama that this campaign seeks to capitalize on the group’s current instability by stopping retreating militants from forming new coalitions or executing strikes.
Military strategy involves a mix of constant patrols, targeted strikes, and sophisticated surveillance efforts to identify terrorist locations and eliminate safe zones in the area. A high-ranking official explained that these maneuvers are designed to disrupt the ability of combatants to consolidate power while they are in disarray.
Despite the recent decline in ISWAP cohesion, security services are maintaining a high level of vigilance. Officials are concerned that displaced fighters might form smaller splinter groups or relocate, which could introduce new dangers to the surrounding population. Consequently, troops stationed around the Lake Chad basin are currently on high alert. The military intends to maintain this pressure through integrated aerial and ground missions, aiming to stabilize the North-East and ensure that the current division within the insurgency does not lead to a greater security crisis.
