Government Pledges Health Sector Overhaul as 31 Professionals Receive NHEA Awards

The Nigerian government reiterated its commitment to health sector reforms during the 2026 NHEA ceremony, where 31 professionals and institutions were celebrated for their outstanding contributions.

The Nigerian government has promised to boost the national health system through strategic reforms, partnerships, and increased investment. This pledge followed the Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Awards (NHEA), which honored 31 distinguished institutions and medical professionals in Lagos.

During the 2026 event at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, emphasized the government’s focus on building a more accessible and resilient healthcare framework. He noted that celebrating high achievers serves as a vital tool for fostering innovation and accountability in the sector.

The event, centered on the theme of digital transformation and local manufacturing, gathered various industry leaders and policymakers. Dr. Anthony Omolola, Chairman of the NHEA Advisory Board, highlighted the rigorous selection process, which involved public voting and expert evaluation to ensure meritocracy.

A significant portion of the ceremony was dedicated to honoring veteran figures. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Dr. Ladi Awosika for health financing, Sir Ike Onyechi for pharmaceutical leadership, and Professor Samuel Chukwunonyerem Ohaegbulam for his work in neurosurgery. Additional awards were granted to various entities, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, LASHMA, and FCMB, recognizing their contributions to public health, insurance, and financial support respectively.

Organizers stated that for over ten years, the NHEA has served as a benchmark for excellence in the healthcare industry, encouraging continued improvements in service delivery across the nation.
