According to the World Health Organization, the ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in 600 fatalities. This update comes just three days after the death toll surpassed the 500 mark. Official records from the United Nations health agency indicate that 1,759 cases have been identified since the crisis began in mid-May.
Neighboring Uganda has reported two deaths, with 17 out of 20 confirmed patients successfully recovering. Within the DRC, health officials report a 34 percent fatality rate, with 285 individuals having recovered and 304 suspected cases currently being reviewed. While the virus has spread across four provinces in the northeast, Ituri remains the primary focus of the outbreak.
The current emergency involves the Bundibugyo strain, a rare variant of the virus for which no established vaccine or treatment currently exists. As of July 2, a trial testing the effectiveness of the antiviral drug remdesivir and the monoclonal antibody MBP134 began in the region. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. This marks the 17th time the DRC has faced an Ebola outbreak since the condition was first identified in the mineral-rich Ituri province, a region currently destabilized by armed groups.
