Serena Williams may be unable to compete in the Wimbledon doubles tournament following a right knee injury sustained during her first-round singles loss to Maya Joint on Tuesday. Although no physical issues were visible during the three-set match, the 44-year-old missed her scheduled post-match media session.
Her representative, Jill Smoller, confirmed that Williams hurt her knee late in the opening set and received clearance from medical officials to skip press duties. Despite the setback, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is actively working to recover in time to participate alongside her sister, Venus Williams. The duo, who received a tournament wildcard, have secured six Wimbledon doubles titles together previously.
Serena, who returned to competitive tennis in June, recently expressed that her motivation for competing stems from a desire to play before her children. Her family, including husband Alexis Ohanian and sister Venus, observed her recent match from the players’ box.
