Lagos State Opposes Federal Government’s Kuramo Beach Reclamation Project

Lagos State officials are moving to block federal reclamation projects at Kuramo Beach and have ordered the removal of structures obstructing drainage systems to combat seasonal flooding.

The Lagos State government has formally declared its intention to block the Federal Government’s reclamation efforts at Kuramo Beach, located along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab labeled the ongoing activities as unacceptable, asserting that the area serves as a critical breathing space for Atlantic waters that must be preserved.

In a related enforcement action, the state has issued an order for the immediate removal of all structures currently obstructing drainage channels, wetlands, and storm water paths in the Lekki-Epe corridor. Starting Monday, enforcement teams will begin clearing these areas to mitigate flood risks during the rainy season. Commissioner Wahab confirmed that the state ministry will seal buildings found violating environmental regulations, emphasizing that illegal construction on floodplains will be demolished regardless of who owns them.

Regarding the conflict with federal agents at Kuramo Beach, Wahab stated that the state has engaged with federal officials to halt the project. He warned that the state will not permit any activities that threaten natural water channels or exacerbate flooding, promising that teams will actively clear blocked discharge points leading into the lagoon.
