Serena Williams defeated by Maya Joint in singles comeback

Serena Williams made her long-awaited return to singles tennis at Wimbledon, but was edged out by Maya Joint in a hard-fought three-set match.

Serena Williams returned to Wimbledon’s Centre Court for her first singles match in four years, ending in a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 loss to Australian talent Maya Joint. Despite the result, the 44-year-old displayed glimpses of her former dominance throughout the three-set encounter.

The match began with visible nerves from Williams, who struggled to find her rhythm in the opening set. Analysts noted she appeared to hold back on her shots and struggled with her breathing. While she clocked several serves over 120mph, her movement around the court seemed labored, frequently preventing her from reaching incoming balls.

Williams improved significantly in the second set, increasing her winner count and successfully forcing a decider after saving a match point. However, fatigue became a factor in the final set as Joint took control. Experts suggested that while Williams showed a higher level of play than when she last stepped away from the sport in 2022, she requires more consistent match practice to compete at the highest level again.
