Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith withdraw from Commonwealth Games

Top British athletes including Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith have withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games, raising questions about the event’s stature in a crowded sporting calendar.

Olympic silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games due to an injury. The 33-year-old heptathlete, who previously claimed gold in both 2018 and 2022, was set to participate in her third Games. Team England has confirmed that Niamh Emerson will step in as her replacement.

Alongside Johnson-Thompson, prominent athletes Dina Asher-Smith, Matt Hudson-Smith, and Daryll Neita have also pulled out of the competition. Their absences, confirmed on the day of the opening ceremony, serve as a notable setback for the event. To bolster the squad, officials have added Renee Regis, Ebuka Nwokeji, Tara Simpson-Sullivan, and Tom Keen to the roster before the track and field events commence on Monday.

This year’s Games face scrutiny regarding their relevance, as stars like Keely Hodgkinson have chosen to prioritize the European Championships instead. International competitors, including Julien Alfred and Summer McIntosh, have also opted out in favor of other major sporting events. These withdrawals follow complications regarding the scheduling of the Glasgow Games, which were organized on short notice after Victoria, Australia, resigned as host in 2023.

Despite the challenges, Glasgow 2026 chief executive Phil Batty emphasized that the event remains an opportunity for rising stars to achieve a breakthrough. Commonwealth Sport chief executive Katie Sadlier noted that future efforts will focus on better coordination with the international sporting calendar to prevent scheduling conflicts.
