England had initially surged ahead with a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. However, despite Thomas Tuchel’s tactical defensive approach, Argentina managed a dramatic comeback by scoring twice in the final moments of the match, specifically at the 85th and 92nd minutes. This victory carries historical weight, occurring exactly 40 years after their famous 1986 World Cup quarter-final win against the same opponent.
Following the match, the encounter was marked by political controversy when Argentine players displayed a banner declaring Las Malvinas are Argentine. This reference concerns the ongoing sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory. The islands were the site of an armed conflict in 1982 triggered by an invasion under the military junta of General Leopoldo Galtieri. That 74-day war resulted in hundreds of casualties on both sides, and islanders have since overwhelmingly voted to maintain their status as a British territory.
Regarding the tournament outcome, Argentina eventually fell to Spain in the final, while England secured a third-place finish by defeating France 6-4.
