Sam Kerr Returns to NWSL with Gotham FC After Chelsea Exit

Australian striker Sam Kerr has signed a four-year deal with NWSL champions Gotham FC, returning to the club where she played early in her career.

Australian national team captain Sam Kerr has signed a four-year contract with Gotham FC, the current NWSL title holders. This transition marks her return to the New Jersey-based franchise, where she previously competed from 2015 to 2017 when the team operated as Sky Blue FC. Her agreement runs through the 2030 season.

Kerr concludes her tenure at Chelsea, where she spent six-and-a-half seasons and established herself as the club’s record goalscorer. During her time in London, she registered 116 goals in 158 matches and secured five Women’s Super League titles along with several domestic cup honors. Her final game for the Blues resulted in a winning goal against Manchester United.

The forward remains the NWSL’s all-time record holder for regular-season scoring, having secured three consecutive Golden Boot awards during her initial stint in the United States. Gotham FC president Yael Averbuch West characterized the acquisition as a significant milestone, noting Kerr’s status as a transformative talent. Kerr, who recently returned to professional play following an ACL injury in 2024, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the team’s future success.
