Ondo Cleric Demands Capital Punishment for Kidnappers and Bandits

An Ondo State Islamic cleric has urged the government to enforce the death penalty for convicted kidnappers and bandits, citing both religious and safety concerns.

Sheikh AbdulRauf Ajiboye Lagbaji, a prominent Islamic leader in Ondo State, has called on authorities to execute individuals convicted of kidnapping and banditry. During an Ashura Day event in Akure hosted by the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria, Lagbaji argued that those guilty of these crimes should not be reintegrated into society.

Addressing the Owo church massacre, Lagbaji specifically urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to carry out death sentences for those responsible for the attack. He cited Islamic teachings, noting that the faith mandates strict justice for murder and does not support leniency for perpetrators of violent crimes.

Furthermore, the cleric encouraged legal professionals to stop defending those accused of such acts and suggested constitutional changes to expedite executions for convicted offenders. The event also featured calls from other leaders, including the Grand Imam of Akure, Alhaji AbdulHakeem Yayi-Akorede, who encouraged Muslims to participate more in politics and focus on national progress.

Prince Leke Adegbite, Chairman of the Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, echoed concerns regarding Muslim underrepresentation in state governance, urging religious leaders to continue advocating for political inclusion.
