Residents of Hadejia, Jigawa State, were sent into a state of alarm on Saturday night after a massive fire erupted at a Liquefied Petroleum Gas retail shop on Katagum Road. The blaze decimated three storefronts, two cars, and a motorcycle. The disaster reportedly began while a truck was unloading gas supplies at the location.
Local observers indicated that the fire ignited after an open flame used to cook tofu near the facility made contact with the gas. This triggered a powerful blast that rapidly spread through the site. Bystanders described hearing sounds resembling bomb detonations as over 10 individual gas cylinders exploded in rapid succession. Thick plumes of smoke forced citizens and business owners to abandon the area in search of safety.
Emergency responders and security forces arrived quickly to battle the inferno, eventually bringing the situation under control before it could reach additional structures. SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police, confirmed that while property damage is significant—potentially reaching millions of naira—no casualties were reported. Officials are currently assessing the full extent of the financial losses incurred from the incident.
