The Federal Government of Nigeria, acting via the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has declared it will legally pursue anyone caught mishandling personal information as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner for the NDPC, shared this stance during a recent television interview on Channels Television.
This directive addresses growing anxieties regarding data security and the protection of voter details. Olatunji stated that the agency is increasing its oversight of how political organizations and institutions manage individual data during the election cycle. He emphasized that as political entities gather significant amounts of voter records, the security of this private information has become a vital national priority.
Olatunji noted that many political organizations lack proper privacy protections and oversight for the data they amass. He warned that the commission intends to hold accountable anyone who exposes sensitive information, confirming that legal prosecution will follow for those who violate these standards.
