The Bauchi State branch of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported the seizure of over 2.2 tonnes of illegal substances since October 2025. During a press event on Friday for the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, State Commander Hassan Yaqub noted that 2,248.591 kilograms of various narcotics were confiscated over the past seven months.
These substances included cannabis, methamphetamine, codeine, and tramadol, among others. Commander Yaqub emphasized that drug abuse is a primary catalyst for criminal activity, urging the public to support the agency’s efforts. He explicitly stated that the environment will become increasingly difficult for drug dealers in the state, as the agency remains committed to arresting offenders and seizing property tied to illegal drug operations.
Since taking office in late 2025, Yaqub has overseen 79 convictions, with 74 cases still awaiting trial. Additionally, a cannabis plantation was discovered in the Bogoro Local Government Area, leading to an arrest and the recovery of 108 kilograms of the plant. The command also successfully rehabilitated 67 individuals and is currently assisting 12 others.
Beyond enforcement, the agency has conducted over 300 awareness sessions as part of its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, engaging approximately 1.5 million people across the state. Yaqub expressed gratitude to the Bauchi State Government and other partners for their support in addressing this ongoing challenge.
