Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has advocated for delaying the introduction of state-level police forces until the 2027 general elections have concluded. The former Anambra State governor cited potential misuse of the system and procedural flaws as his primary reasons for the suggested postponement.
Addressing the Senate’s recent approval of the State Police Bill through a social media statement, Obi acknowledged that while centralized policing is often viewed as unsuitable for a country as diverse as Nigeria, the current legislative approach remains problematic. He criticized the lack of public hearings and the perceived haste in the law’s passage, which he argues lacks sufficient community input.
Obi highlighted historical anxieties regarding the potential for state governors to weaponize local security units against political opponents or to interfere with electoral integrity. He emphasized that for such a policy to succeed, it must include rigorous, independent oversight bodies shielded from executive interference. Given his skepticism about the current government’s intentions, Obi concluded that delaying the rollout is the only way to ensure the 2027 elections are not compromised by proxy political influence.
