The Biafra Independence Movement and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) has urged the United Nations to assist in reorganizing Nigeria into six sovereign nations. This call comes ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. In a statement released Thursday by media director Mazi Chris Mocha, the organization labeled the 1914 unification of Northern and Southern Nigeria a failure, noting that it has not fostered the intended national progress or unity.
With the UNGA session approaching in September 2026, the group suggests that the international community utilize this forum to promote a peaceful resolution to Nigeria’s internal issues. The organization attributes the nation’s ongoing struggles with insecurity and lack of economic development to its current structural design. BIM-MASSOB argues that granting independence to each of the six geopolitical zones is the most effective strategy for neutralizing domestic terrorism.
Led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, the group asserts that international law would safeguard the rights and assets of people across the South-East, South-West, South-South, North-Central, North-East, and North-West regions under this proposed model. They suggest that future cooperation could be managed through bilateral treaties. Furthermore, the group encouraged political leaders in Abuja to prioritize these public interests and reaffirmed their commitment to achieving self-determination through non-violent means.
