Lagos State Initiates Demolition of Unsafe Structures Following Deadly Building Collapse

Lagos State officials are moving to demolish all condemned buildings in the Alakija area after a collapse killed nine people and trapped dozens.

In the wake of a building collapse in Alakija, Amuwo-Odofin, which resulted in nine deaths and 27 rescues, the Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate destruction of all buildings previously identified as structurally unstable. Following the conclusion of emergency rescue efforts, Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso announced that the government will enforce strict compliance to prevent future catastrophes.

Speaking for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Omotoso highlighted that the ill-fated three-storey structure had been officially marked for evacuation due to its precarious state, yet residents ignored these warnings. He commended the swift intervention of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), local fire services, and security forces who assisted in saving 27 individuals.

The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward structural hazards, confirming that all buildings previously flagged as unsafe are scheduled for demolition. Omotoso warned that individuals who violate safety codes or build beneath high-tension power lines will face legal consequences. He urged citizens to prioritize safety over economic concerns, noting that the survivors are currently receiving medical attention as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
