American middle-distance athlete Jonah Koech has been issued a three-year ban from competition following a blood doping violation. The United States Anti-Doping Agency confirmed that the suspension stems from highly abnormal readings found within his athlete biological passport. This monitoring system allows officials to detect potential doping activity through long-term tracking of blood markers, even in the absence of a direct positive test for a specific drug.
Koech previously gained prominence by winning the 1500m event at the US Outdoor Championships last year. During that race, he set a meet record of 3:30.17, defeating notable competitors including Cole Hocker and Ethan Strand. Due to his acceptance of the penalty for using a prohibited substance or method, the 29-year-old has been stripped of that title.
The ruling mandates that all competitive results recorded by Koech since July 30, 2025, are disqualified. This decision requires him to forfeit all medals, points, and financial prizes earned from that date onward. His samples were analyzed during a period spanning July and August of last year. Koech, who is originally from Kenya and gained eligibility to compete for the United States in 2021, has not participated in any races since placing 13th at the World Championships in Tokyo last September.
