A prominent coalition of northern youths has declared its support for the Independent National Electoral Commission and its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, labeling recent criticisms of the organization as politically manufactured. During an official meeting on Thursday, the Arewa Youth Forum, which represents millions of young Nigerians, vowed to protect the commission’s autonomy before the 2027 general election.
Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, who leads the forum’s Board of Trustees, argued that public skepticism regarding the commission is fueled by propaganda rather than actual performance issues. The group highlighted significant operational progress, such as the efficient distribution of materials and the successful implementation of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which they believe has effectively curtailed electoral fraud.
In response, Prof. Amupitan appreciated the rare expression of impartiality, stating that this support bolsters the commission’s commitment to the upcoming 2027 cycle. The chairman confirmed that national elections are set for January 15, 2027, followed by state-level contests on February 6, 2027. Citing the recent Ekiti State governorship poll as a benchmark for future success, Amupitan emphasized the necessity of getting electoral processes right for the sake of regional stability.
To solidify their partnership, the Arewa Youth Forum proposed a grassroots voter education initiative and a structured feedback system for reporting polling logistics. Prof. Amupitan accepted these suggestions, tasking the commission’s publicity department to collaborate directly with the group to improve outreach and integrity across northern regions.
