Federal Government Announces Future Reassessment of N70,000 Minimum Wage

Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila has announced that the federal government plans to review the N70,000 minimum wage, citing the need for compensation to match rising living costs.

The Nigerian government has indicated that the current N70,000 minimum wage needs adjustment to align with current economic conditions. Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, confirmed this intention at the 2026 Good Governance Summit held in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu previously updated the wage from N30,000 in July 2024. Additionally, the administration shortened the mandatory review cycle from five years to three years to ensure worker compensation remains relevant. Gbajabiamila emphasized that the government views itself as a partner to labor and intends to conduct the next review through cooperation rather than conflict.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, noted that successful governance is measured by how policies improve the actual lives and productivity of citizens. Furthermore, Williams Akporeha, National Coordinator of Working People United, reaffirmed that the workforce is essential for the nation’s economic success and development.
