INEC Suspends Official Over Leaked Voter Data of Emeka Ike

INEC has suspended a staff member following the unauthorized release of Nollywood actor Emeka Ike’s voter registration details, though officials confirm the main database remains secure.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed the suspension of an electoral officer suspected of leaking the voter registration information of actor and politician Emeka Ike. Mohammed Haruna, an INEC National Commissioner, announced this development in Abuja during an event hosted by the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa.

This action follows public scrutiny after the actor’s private registration details were exposed online amid a dispute regarding a Federal Capital Territory political primary. Initial investigations indicate that the commission’s primary information technology infrastructure remains secure and the broader voter database has not been compromised.

Instead, internal audits suggest that the sensitive information was obtained through an authorized user account linked to the current Continuous Voter Registration exercise. By utilizing digital audit logs, investigators successfully pinpointed the specific account responsible for the unauthorized disclosure, resulting in the subsequent questioning of implicated personnel. Security agencies and data protection authorities continue to examine the incident.
