Nigeria Brings Home 66 Citizens Following South African Xenophobic Violence

Following a surge in xenophobic attacks, the Nigerian government has successfully evacuated a second wave of 66 citizens from South Africa, with plans to bring everyone else home.

The Nigerian government has successfully transported a second group of 66 citizens back home from South Africa, responding to recent outbreaks of xenophobic hostility. These individuals arrived at Lagos international airport on Wednesday evening, marking the continuation of an evacuation initiative sanctioned by President Bola Tinubu.

Previously, on June 11, a larger group of 258 people returned via an Air Peace flight. Dipo Onabowale, representing the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) in Lagos, noted that the current effort was supported by ValueJet CEO Kunle Soname and coordinated with the Nigerian High Commission.

Onabowale extended gratitude to President Tinubu for backing these rescue operations. Regarding future plans, he mentioned that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively resolving logistical hurdles experienced during the initial phase. Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has committed to ensuring that every Nigerian currently registered in South Africa will be safely brought home.
