DSS initiates inquiry into agent behavior following Sowore incarceration

The Department of State Services is investigating the conduct of its personnel following the controversial remand of activist Omoyele Sowore at Kuje Correctional Centre.

The Department of State Services has launched an internal inquiry regarding the actions of its staff during the events surrounding the detention of activist Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. The agency is addressing public unease triggered by incidents at the Federal High Court on Monday, specifically a dispute between a custodial officer and security personnel.

Favour Dozie, the DSS Deputy Director for Public Relations, confirmed that the Director-General mandated this probe. A point of contention currently under review is the activist’s decision to travel to the prison in a DSS vehicle rather than the standard correctional transport.

Regarding the legal background, the agency stated the charges against Sowore relate to an August 25, 2025, social media post critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Service claimed it previously requested a retraction on September 4, 2025, to avoid escalation. Sowore faces charges under the 2024 Cybercrimes Act, and the agency emphasized it did not oppose his bail on self-recognition, asserting that the subsequent remand was purely a result of judicial procedures.
