A traditional leader from the Bende Local Government Area in Abia State is currently under scrutiny following a circulating video. In the footage, the monarch allegedly commented on voters who might oppose the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, during the 2027 general elections. The identity of this ruler has not been disclosed.
Local resident Peter Ekekwe criticized the remarks this past Friday in Umuahia. He voiced his disapproval of traditional leaders engaging in partisan political activities. Ekekwe emphasized that democratic processes entitle every Nigerian to select their preferred candidates without being subjected to pressure or intimidation. He stated that citizens have the right to vote based on their own conscience and conviction.
Furthermore, Ekekwe argued that palaces should remain neutral ground rather than serving as political campaign hubs. He asserted that traditional rulers should act as unifying figures for all community members, regardless of their political ties. He concluded by urging political figures to maintain peace during their campaigns and advised monarchs across the nation to preserve their neutrality, serving as fathers to all rather than choosing sides in partisan conflicts.
