Sulaiman Mohammed Abdul, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the North-West zone, has officially started the Nigeria Police Force’s Violent Crime Response Unit in Kebbi State. This move is designed to bolster security and proactive crime prevention within the region. During the ceremony in Birnin Kebbi, Abdul explained that the unit follows orders from the Inspector-General of Police to modernize national crime-fighting strategies.
The unit functions through advanced technology, focusing on the collection and evaluation of intelligence regarding potential criminal acts. By monitoring threats early, the police aim to intercept illegal activity before it impacts the public. Abdul emphasized that the force is shifting from a reactive stance to a proactive one to better ensure civilian safety. He also reminded officers to prioritize professional standards and human rights, noting that officer welfare remains a primary focus for police leadership.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar Hadejia, praised the launch, noting that it builds on existing efforts against groups like the Lakurawa and Mamudawa. He acknowledged that the state’s position on international borders creates unique difficulties, but stated that current operations have already led to the arrests and neutralization of many suspects. Hadejia confirmed that the new unit will significantly increase the command’s ability to maintain order and effectively mitigate violent crime.
