Peter Obi cautions against viewing journalists and activists as security risks following Sowore’s remand

Peter Obi has warned authorities against treating critics and journalists as threats to the state after the remand of activist Omoyele Sowore, emphasizing the need for protected civic freedoms.

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has issued a warning regarding the treatment of activists, journalists, and government critics. This statement followed the recent remand of Omoyele Sowore to Kuje Prison.

Sharing his thoughts on X, the former Anambra State governor noted his deep concern regarding the situation. He emphasized that democratic systems should not be utilized in ways that restrict public engagement or infringe upon civic liberties. While acknowledging the judiciary’s role in legal matters, Obi cautioned that state institutions must avoid any perception of suppressing opposing views or intimidating the press.

Obi stated that a healthy democracy relies on protecting human rights, particularly the freedom of speech and the right to assemble, as protected by the constitution. He noted that with Nigeria already facing significant economic distress and security instability, officials should act to prevent further social tension.

According to Obi, those who criticize the government and civil society members play a vital role in ensuring accountability. He warned that labeling these individuals as threats rather than partners in progress could lead the country toward authoritarianism. He advocated for inclusive dialogue to address national challenges and urged authorities to uphold the rule of law while ensuring Sowore’s constitutional rights are maintained.
