Omoyele Sowore vows to continue activism despite Kuje Prison remand

African Action Congress candidate Omoyele Sowore remains steadfast in his activism after a Federal High Court judge ordered his remand to Kuje Prison.

Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, stated he plans to use his upcoming period of incarceration to keep organizing the public. This follows a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday. The judge issued the remand order after revoking the activist’s bail last week.

The court’s decision arrived after Justice Umar rejected a request for him to recuse himself from the trial. The case centers on accusations by the Department of State Services concerning public statements in which Sowore allegedly labeled President Bola Tinubu a criminal. Despite the ruling, Sowore maintained his resolve, claiming the time behind bars will not hinder his efforts. He noted that he was prepared for the outcome and emphasized the necessity of personal sacrifice for the nation’s benefit.

Sowore explained that his recent failure to appear in court, which led to the bail revocation, was due to necessary legal consultations. He criticized the decision, noting that his lead lawyer, Olumide-Fusika, SAN, had formally notified the court of his whereabouts. He concluded by asserting that imprisonment is ineffective at stopping a cause he believes is just.
