Kwara APC hopefuls urge President Tinubu to intervene in governorship candidate selection

Ten Kwara APC governorship aspirants have petitioned President Tinubu to challenge the selection of Speaker Yakubu Danladi Salihu as the party’s 2027 candidate, citing concerns over imposition and potential electoral failure.

A group of ten politicians from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has formally protested to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These individuals, who vied for the party’s governorship ticket, are challenging the selection of Engr. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, the current Speaker of the State House of Assembly, as the candidate for the 2027 elections. They claim his selection was an act of imposition.

The petitioners warned that if President Tinubu does not intervene in this contentious primary process, the party risks losing Kwara State in the upcoming general elections. They argued that unless the current direction is altered, party members and stakeholders may defect to other political platforms to pursue their goals.

In a joint formal communication, the group highlighted the deteriorating state of the party locally. They pointed to the 2019 Otoge movement, which brought the APC to power, as a collective effort of various stakeholders rather than the work of one person. However, they expressed that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has failed to lead in an inclusive manner, leading to the marginalization of those who helped build the party.

The aggrieved aspirants asserted that Governor AbdulRazaq has lost the political legitimacy to influence the party’s future. They cautioned that his decline in popularity could negatively impact any candidate he supports. Consequently, they are requesting that the President audit the selection process and consider the credentials and broad appeal of other aspirants to ensure the party remains viable and unified.
