FCT Police debunk claims surrounding viral video of Peter Obi and officers

The FCT Police Command has dismissed claims that a viral video of Peter Obi speaking to officers in Abuja constituted a political endorsement, clarifying that the encounter occurred during a routine response to a party leadership dispute.

The FCT Police Command has issued a correction regarding a widely shared video featuring Nigerian Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi speaking with police officers in Abuja. The footage showed Obi praising the officers’ contributions to the nation and expressing a desire for improved welfare for them and their families. He also commented on the importance of not involving police in partisan political conflicts.

SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police, stated that the video had been manipulated with campaign imagery and misleading captions to imply a political endorsement. She dismissed these claims as entirely fabricated. According to the police, the encounter actually took place in 2024 when officers were dispatched to the Labour Party headquarters in Utako to manage a disturbance caused by an internal leadership disagreement. Obi, who was present, spoke to the officers solely to explain the nature of the party dispute. The police emphasized that this interaction was not political and happened incidentally during a standard public order operation.
