Allegations of Voter Bribery and Violence Mar Ekiti Gubernatorial Election

ADC gubernatorial candidate Dare Bejide has accused APC members of bribery and assault during the Ekiti election, while APC official Makinde Araoye denies the claims and reports a smooth voting process.

Dare Bejide, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) gubernatorial candidate, has reported instances of vote buying and physical violence during Saturday’s Ekiti State election. While casting his ballot at Ward 2, Polling Unit 004 in Ilawe-Ekiti, Bejide claimed that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were openly handing out cash to influence voters.

Bejide further reported that his driver was injured during a scuffle while attempting to protect him from being shoved by others at the polling station. The driver was subsequently transported to a medical facility for care. Bejide expressed frustration over the perceived lack of effective intervention by police stationed at the site, characterizing the bribery attempts as a detriment to the democratic process. His son, Olumide Bejide, echoed these sentiments, alleging that APC leaders were systemically purchasing voter support throughout Ilawe, arguing that these resources should instead be invested in public infrastructure.

In contrast, APC official Makinde Araoye rejected these accusations, describing the election as a peaceful and orderly exercise. Araoye credited improvements in INEC technology for the efficient voting process and stated his belief that Governor Biodun Oyebanji would succeed due to his track record. Addressing the confrontation, Araoye maintained he was merely observing his ward when Bejide attempted to obstruct his movement. He insisted his actions were strictly in self-defense. At this time, both the police and INEC have yet to provide an official comment regarding these claims.
